It seems odd that the content installer, an optional utility that adds content including fill styles and dictionaries, doesn't let you download all content in a one-time operation. The process is slowed down somewhat by the fact that some of the included content must be downloaded before it can first be used.

While we found thumbnails in the designs gallery quicker to load than in version 9, they're still a little on the small side, and it's often necessary to open a template or drag an element to the page to get a full idea of what it looks like. Minimised to the right are frames holding the various line, fill and picture options. Layers are used for transitions, an example of a transition being the behaviour triggered when the user moves their mouse over an element. Where pages have layers, these can be displayed and hidden again by clicking the arrow next to the thumbnail. By default, the site you're creating is displayed in a large window to the left, with its pages navigated via thumbnails to the right.

Xara Web Designer 10 Premium’s clean interface provides an editing experience similar to desktop publishing, and surprisingly, given the wide range of features available, the interface is uncluttered.

XARA WEB DESIGNER REVIEW SOFTWARE

In use, this software is much like the previous edition, which is no bad thing. Unfortunately it's only available in the Premium version we're reviewing here, not the standard version. Fortunately, version 10 sees the introduction of Responsive Website Design, a feature aimed at addressing just this issue. We've long been impressed with its sophistication and ease of use, but when we reviewed version 9 last year we were critical of its lack of support for the highly variable screen sizes found on mobile devices. īack to product details Add your review.Xara's Web Designer is a WYSIWYG web editor that lets people without HTML or web skills create professional-looking websites. If you want to make a site with short "pages" and pretty graphics, Xara may well work fine for you. Fourthly, when I tried to republish an imported html article, it gave an "out of memory message" and didn't spit out half the file. Thirdly, trying to import files with tables gives unpredictable or missing results. As with many of these CSS-type positioning programs, long CSS text boxes seem to be minced when browsers decode them. Secondly, it works with a page metaphor, "pages" really being text boxes, and their length is limited, both within the program, and more critically with what happens when you export to a website. Firstly, the import loses all links, unless you bring in RTF. It has many import options, and I need to do a makeover of a big, text-intensive site. As a note, I've used far worse, so Xara may be a good choice for others, and if the needs are modest, this seems good. As I said, I'm looking for a replacement of Xara now.

I think this is good to start and good for small sites.įor a true bare bones beginner, try Kompozer or other older free product to learn. Being able to export to other editors in the future is a key issue here, and with other programs too. It seems many web page creation programs are like that, so take care with them all. I'm having problems exporting this to any other program, thus my main gripe now is that once you use it, you are welded and stuck with it. I had to do some tweaks, and a few tables and such would not import, but over ok there. I've had good luck with copy and paste of "very standard HTML" from my old sites into Xara program. I'm not doing anything complex and only use a fraction of Xara's features, yet, I am looking for something else. This isn't bad, but it gets clumsy as the site grows, and as an occasional user, it can be awkward. I've used a number of Xara products in their web site creation products.
